The Press Rigs the Game

As we enter the last crucial couple of weeks of the 2014 Congressional campaign- crucial because lies told at this point can never be refuted in time for their falsity to sink in with the ignorant American voters, the mainstream press is demonstrating in classic form exactly how "liberal" it really is.

Three examples from just the last day:

This article from Reuters:

"President Barack Obama made a rare appearance on the campaign trail on Sunday with a rally to support the Democratic candidate for governor in Maryland, but early departures of crowd members while he spoke underscored his continuing unpopularity."

Now, the real story:  Obama made an appearance at a high school stadium in Maryland.  The eight thousand tickets sold out immediately, and many more people showed up than could be accommodated to hear the speech.  The extra people were put into the high school gym.  Obama, when he heard about this went to the gym and met personally with the people there.  After this, some of them left.  No one in the main crowd of 8,000, who greeted Obama with extreme enthusiasm, was seen leaving early.  The event was actually a great success for Obama, but was reported as a humiliating failure, in a deliberate attempt to beat down any Democratic groundswell.

And consider this report from Politico today, showing a cunning understanding of the significance of polls:

"POLITICO poll: Democrats in danger over Ebola...The survey underscores the dangers for Democrats in the midterms"

Once again, a report deliberately cast to make the Democrats' prospects in the elections look bleak.  Now, what was this based on?

"Voters who intend to support Republicans in the most consequential Senate and House elections this November had significantly less confidence in the federal government’s response to the occurrence of Ebola, according to a new POLITICO poll."

I see.  Democrats are in trouble because voters who have made up their minds to vote Republican have less confidence in the Government that other voters do.  Or, as Daily Kos explains it:

"To summarize: Politico poll found roughly 2:1 confidence to no confidence ratio on the government's Ebola response, with Republicans more critical than Democrats, and found that Democrats led Republicans in the horserace ... yet somehow they decided that what their poll really showed was that Ebola is a problem Democrats."

Once again, a story which is in general quite favorable for Democrats is presented as a disaster for them.  "Public strongly supports Obama's reaction to Ebola- Good news for Republicans."

Finally, here is the purportedly liberal (and definitely black) Tavis Smiley  agreeing wholeheartedly on national Television with Bill Krystol's claim that the Republicans are going to run the table in November:

And the hits go on- misleading, dishonest reporting designed to see to it that Democrats get to election day as discouraged as possible, and to provide cover for Republicans whose vote suppression and gerrymandering wins them elections in districts where the people do not agree with their piggish priorities.

As I have said so many times before, the Democrats can crush the Republicans without hardly trying, but they can't beat the Republicans and the press together.  Republican ownership of the mainstream press- one of the worst gifts brought to us by deregulation- the greatest scam ever played on the American people.
